Author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott saw a drop in her net worth from $38 billion to $30 billion as she sold Amazon stocks worth over $8 billion, as per a filing on November 8. The filing disclosed that Scott sold 11 percent of her Amazon shares on September 30 this year. Scott received a 4% stake in Amazon as part of her divorce settlement with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Scott is known for her generous philanthropic initiatives. So much so that from the 400 million Amazon shares that she received as part of her divorce settlement with Bezos, she has given away two-thirds of that wealth to philanthropy. Her benevolent nature has ranked her among the US’s top 5 most generous living donors. According to Forbes, she has donated approximately $17.3 billion to non-profit organizations and other humanitarian ventures.
Her net worth currently stands at $29.5 billion as per Forbes’s real-time net worth estimation. Following her divorce from Bezos, in May 2019, she committed to the Giving Pledge, vowing to donate a minimum of half her fortune throughout her life. This is evident through her Yield Giving website, which is annually updated with grants made to several social causes. Scott prefers not to publicize her donations and charity work unless asked by the recipients.
Scott recently donated $1.5 million to the Mni Sota Fund, a nonprofit organization that aims to create wealth for urban Native individuals in Minnesota. Access to Capital for Entrepreneurs in Georgia obtained $10 million from her in August. Furthermore, Coastal Enterprises, a group dedicated to rural economic growth in Maine, received $15 million in October 2024, marking an unusual second contribution to the same entity from Scott, as reported by Forbes.
According to Forbes, Scott gives the fund-receiving party full autonomy to decide how they are going to use the new funds. She has donated to more than 2,300 NGOs. She was ranked 26 on the Forbes 400 Richest People of America list in 2024.
